Ask any hijabi about how "the veil prevents the natural process of courtship and flirtation" Ken, but don't be surprised if she laughs in your face, k? Plenty of girls still get hit on even when their hair is covered. Also, what about already-married women who choose to wear the veil? There are plenty of women who don't take the veil until later in life (and plenty of those do it -gasp- over the objections of their husbands! I had a professor in jut such a situation.) while controlling what a woman wears can be a method of patriarchal control (in any religion/culture) it does not reduce the article of clothing itself to only this.

Sorry Dan, I agree with the majority of comments already posted- and implying that Mullins was some how out of line for "jumping in to correct her" (which is not, in my opinion, an accurate characterization of what Mullins did) is similar to saying that you would be out of line for "correcting" a generalization that a woman you were interviewing made about other women just because you're a man. Haddad's Muslim and/or Arab credentials doesn't make her opinions about all things Arab and/or Muslim above challenge by non-Arabs or non-Muslims. Particularly when she's making the claim that she knows the motivations of other women better than even they themselves do.

Becoming truly democratic will not mean extinction. Just because Israel Jews will be outnumbered by Palestinian Arabs does not mean they will become extinct, unless you believe that having a larger population is the only thing keeping others from killing them off entirely, in which case you're not familiar with the force disparity between the IDF and really every one else in the region. If I were you I'd be embarrassed to have written this. I understand the stylistic impulse toward snark on this site but C'MON, Charles, you're better than that.

Also- immigrating from a nation that is "a state sponsor of terrorism" does not a terrorist make. SIGH. This is depressing.

So by the Bachmann standard, every US assassination should be considered an act of war against the country in which the assassination occurred?

Well said, Paul.

@7- you're right, because otherwise they'll just be standing around doing nothing. And being on unemployment MUST mean they're lazy bums! Only lazy bums get laid off when a company goes under!

Book lovers: Please don't shop the Borders Liquidation sale. Yes, there will be cheap books. Pay the extra few dollars and support a local bookstore to try to prevent this from happening to them, too. If you must shop the sale, please don't be a dick to the staff. A lot of great people lost their jobs in an already shitty economy so be human about it. Don't ask them what they'll do next (most don't know and few want to talk about it with the asshole vultures picking through the remainders-yes, that means you!) Don't comment on how great the prices are, don't try to return shit and don't steal. I know it is tempting for many to dance on the grave of a big corporation but try to remember that real people staff those stores- people who love books and bookstores- and they didn't kill any Indie stores or set the prices or decide that Border Rewards was a good idea. Condolences to all the staff still left, particularly you guys in downtown.

@32- The Libyan, Syrian, Bahraini and Iranian governments do not, even combined and multiplied by a factor of 100, receive the amount of US military aid that Israel does. While those acts are certainly horrific and deserve nothing short of full-throated condemnation, the Israeli government's actions against the Palestinians are funded, defended and perpetuated by US policy, US tax dollars and by every single US President since Israel became a country. It isn't anti-semitic for an American (Ed Mast or otherwise) to argue that we don't want any part in funding these actions. Denouncing one nation's brutality against another does not require denouncing every act of brutality ever committed.

@14- "The United States donates close to half a million dollars each year to the Palestinian Authority. "

Half a million vs. 3 billion? While I agree this isn't an infringement of free speech, but your opening line doesn't help your case. Or seem to be relevant at all to the discussion.

But if you want to go there, it's also worth mentioning that the 3 billion in aid to Israel is almost all military Aid (Israel is in the top 20 for strongest economies and certainly doesn't need the cash for humanitarian purposes) And that $3 billion comes with untold amounts of diplomatic support, which may not have a quantifiable dollar amount but certainly helps facilitate the occupation and prevent international scrutiny of Israel's human rights violations against the Palestinians.
