"The directors of that country can only deal with Hollywood at a distance and on their terms."

Not really the reason. For almost all of the 20th century, French directors had their own very successful national film industry and one of the largest film markets in the world so there wasn't much incentive to seek success in Hollywood. Moreover, working in Hollywood would have meant making English speaking movies and losing some access to the French market.

With all this focus on the rural white poor, one could almost forget that most of them don't vote or that Trump won the 50-100 k/yr income brackets.

It's a dead-ender budget. As if economic elites had lost all pretense at making things better.

@4 wine is subject to excise and sales tax (and duty tax when applicable). Soft drinks have no excise tax to speak of. In fact, the price of soft drinks depends greatly on large subsidies (taxpayer money) to agribusiness (corn).

@17 "Your personal experience is irrelevant because you are one person. We already have the numbers rendering your anecdotes meaningless."

You haven't shown any numbers showing that food stuff or vegetables (by opposition to processed junk) are affordable for Americans especially if they also have to pay a lot more than many others for health care, housing, education, internet access and much else (you know, the essential stuff).

"are you suggesting we should pass laws and policies based primarily on how they affect foreign nations and citizens rather than our own citizens?"

Why do you assume that since it is affecting them first, it is not affecting us greatly that millions of poor farmers living next door lose their income? Mind boggling logic.

"These people voted for Trump with their eyes open."

They voted for jobs and Trump. Does This mean you believe Trump is going to bring them jobs they can live on?

The main issue though is that you are once again focusing on the few that voted against their own interest rather than the many who didn't vote for their interests.

@6 The comparison with other countries doesn't mean what you think it does because the US also has the 2nd highest mean income (1/3 greater than the UK for example). % of income doesn't represent the cost of food but the relative cost of food. My personal experience suggests that food stuff is more expensive in the US than in many places in Western Europe (especially vegetables) but processed/fast food is very cheap here. Much of what is wrong with the American diet can be traced to large agricultural subsidies benefiting agri-business (corn being exhibit one). Killing the rest of the world small farmers like in Mexico is another byproduct of subsidies to giant corporations but it doesn't primarily affect Americans so why consider it?

@13
1- Obama is a black man on a racist planet and he won (probably because he appeared as a progressive populist)
2 - FSB had nothing to do with Democrats losing many state assemblies for 8 years
3 - She was an establishment candidate during an institutional crisis of gigantic proportions.
