Magazine</em></a>&#8212;the local music mag that covers both Whatcom and Skagit County. This month marks the 15th Anniversary of the publication, and this upcoming weekend the city is celebrating it with a bender. </p> <p><div class="blogImageLeft" style="width:212px;"><a href="http://www.thestranger.com/images/blogimages/2013/02/28/1362087050-whatsup.jpeg" class="zoomable"><img src="http://www.thestranger.com/images/blogimages/2013/02/28/thumb-1362087050-whatsup.jpeg" alt="whatsup.jpeg" title="" width="200" height="220" /></a><ul><li class="imageCredit">What's Up Magazine</li><li class="imageCaption"></li></ul></div></p> <p>The fun starts Friday night. <strong>Black Eyes and Neck Ties</strong> will return from the grave they dug in 2009 to play a reunion show, or as I'd like to call it: the "please buy all of our leftover merch that's been sitting in the garage for four years" show. The show will also have <strong>The Narrows</strong>, <strong>The Wastelanders</strong>, and <strong>Sugar Sugar Sugar </strong>performing. Tickets will definitely be hard to get on the day-of, so<a href="http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/323191"> think about buying them online, here.</a></p> <p>Before the music on Friday, there is a gallery art opening at the local DIY art and music space <a href="http://makeshiftproject.com/">Make.Shift</a> that will have every <em>What's Up!</em> Magazine cover that has ever been published (about 200), as well as photographs of live shows and bands from the area during the lifespan of the magazine (think photographs of bands like<strong> Federation X</strong>, <strong>At The Drive-In</strong>, <strong>Murder City Devils</strong>, <strong>Full Frontal Assault</strong>, <strong>Black Eyes &amp; Neckties</strong>, <strong>Macklemore</strong>, and <strong>Black Breath</strong>). </p> <p>If you think that's <em>still </em>not enough...</p> <p><div class="blogImageRight" style="width:212px;"><a href="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/003e/1362089172-lineup.jpg" class="zoomable"><img src="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/003e/1362089172-lineup.jpg" alt="Saturdays Lineup" title="Saturdays Lineup" width="200" height="274" /></a><ul><li class="imageCredit"></li><li class="imageCaption">Saturday's Lineup</li></ul></div>Saturday, there's something that gives not only headaches, but migraines to bookers and event organizers everywhere: an all day festival with 62 local bands spanning 23 venues (including some that usually hold shows and some that don't). <strong>All of the shows are free.</strong> It will be physically impossible to walk down any street in downtown Bellingham and NOT hear some sort of music bleeding from a store's glass windows. I passed by a girl who was about 15 years old crying because the show sold out right after her Mom had dropped her off. Luckily I had an extra ticket so she was able to make her dreams come true and see <strong>Lagwagon</strong> and <strong>Pennywise</strong> in 2013.</p> <p>When I finally made it inside, <strong><a href="http://theloss206.bandcamp.com">The Loss</a></strong> were about to start. I knew it was going to be weird seeing them on Sodo's stage after seeing them countless times around town, whether it's at The Highline, The Kraken, or El Corazon. <div class="blogImageLeft" style="width:262px;"><a href="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/fe7c/1361732044-travis_leva.jpg" class="zoomable"><img src="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/fe7c/1361732044-travis_leva.jpg" alt="Travis_Leva.jpg" title="" width="250" height="250" /></a><ul><li class="imageCredit">Ian Reas</li><li class="imageCaption"></li></ul></div>They looked like they belonged on that tour and weren't just the "local act." During the second song, there was a circle pit filled with people of all ages. Jacob Bevan did an amazing job fronting the band - he made people laugh, interacted with the audience, and didn't say too much or too little between songs in their set, which included a cover of "Coffee Mug" by <strong>The Descendents</strong>. One other thing that definitely stood out too was a white stencil of recently passed Travis Leva on Benny Early's bass cab.</p> <p>Hardcore band <strong>Stick To Your Guns</strong> from Orange County were next. They were good, but nothing too special. I may be wrong, but it didn't looked like anyone came out just to see them. The singer wore a <strong>TRIAL</strong> shirt in respect to the local hardcore band, so that was cool. He said some meaningful words in between songs and looked like he meant it, so that was cool. But nothing they played stuck out too much at this show.</p> <p><strong>Lagwagon</strong> was after that. I just saw them four months ago in Florida for the pop-punk festival called FEST and they killed it. I was excited to see them again. They're total jokesters! You can tell that everyone in the band still has fun playing together. The singer Joey Cape used the microphone cord as a jump rope and made fun of his height next to their guitarist who is easily over 6 and half feet tall. They played all the ragers for about 45 minutes right before Pennywise came out on stage.</p> <p>This was <strong>Pennywise's </strong>25th Anniversary tour with the recently returned Jim Lindberg. Their set was good, they only played two songs off the latest album, <em>All or Nothing</em>, which didn't feature Jim on vocals. The band stuck with what they knew all together - even a ridiculous amount of covers. Honestly, I have never seen a band play for "only" an hour and do three cover songs:</p> <p><strong>Black Flag</strong> - "Nervous Breakdown"<br /><strong>Nirvana</strong> - "Territorial Pissings"<br /> after talking about seeing <strong>Dave Grohl's </strong>"Sound City." <br /><strong>Beastie Boys</strong> - "Fight For Your Right to Party."</p> <p>If you've ever seen Pennywise, though, you'll know two things: there's always at least one cover song and the last song is always "Bro Hymn." It's about friends of Pennywise who have passed away and it's a very sad song considering how often it's played at sporting events. When the song started playing, people on the side of the stage joined the band and started singing along, including Jacob, the singer of <strong>The Loss</strong>. One foot on the monitor and one hand over his heart clenching his black San Francisco Giants shirt over with the veins on his neck sticking out from yelling so hard. After the second chorus, you could see him leave the stage filled with emotion. That song was for a lot of people that night - including Travis.</p> <p>All in all, the show was good. But it happened&#8212;and it was amazing.</p> <p>Since the Linkin Park/Incubus tour was announced, I (much like everyone else who spent time in middle school/high school listening to the End) got excited. But after seeing the price of tickets ($40-$70), I knew it was just a silly dream.</p> <p><div class="blogImageCenter" style="width:412px;"><a href="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/ac98/1346952311-imag0706.jpg" class="zoomable"><img src="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/ac98/1346952311-imag0706.jpg" alt="IMAG0706.jpg" title="" width="400" height="226" /></a></div></p> <p>Thanks to an online contest, and me telling my awesome story that I wrote in the seventh grade about <strong>Linkin Park saving a small town from an alien invasion</strong> (I think I still have this somewhere buried in my room, illustrations and all), I got two tickets to the show at the very last minute.</p> <p>I didn't know what to expect. I had never been to the Tacoma Dome before, nor have I ever seen Linkin Park or Incubus. I was stoked.</p> <p>We show up in Tacoma (after getting lost because a drunk friend was running the GPS system on my phone&#8212;bad idea), snag a perfect parking place four blocks away from the Dome, and begin the night of jokes and sing-alongs.</p> <p>We were too late for opening band Mutemath, and we definitely weren't the only ones not used to a show that starts at 7pm. We timed it perfectly though, right as we got out of the beer line, Incubus went on.</p> <p>They were fun to watch. <strong>Brandon Boyd is still a babe.</strong> They played a couple of hits, the first one being "Wish You Were Here," which got everyone really excited. The band was summed up quickly by Boyd when he said "All of our songs are about making out." So true. Except for the few hits that they played, the set was mostly newer songs. And you could tell because fans were standing still, barely dancing or bobbing their heads, and instead taking pictures of <strong>Brandon Boyd playing bongos</strong>. Some of the songs were so new that you could see the drummer practicing parts of the song before they started playing it.</p> <p>The worst part of the night (by far) was the 45-minute commercial between Incubus and Linkin Park. It only took the crew 10 minutes to set up the stage, but we all had to <strong>stand there and watch commercials about Honda Civic</strong> while listening to Linkin Park before they were going to play! It caused mayhem. There was a small fight in front of where we were standing, involving two girls in tank tops. Nothing good ever happens from that. </p> <p><div style="text-align:center;"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/nAmQTMs5CUA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></p> <p>When Honda Civic was done preaching, Beastie Boy's "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" came on to introduce Linkin Park. There were DJ scratches, a lot of pointing, jumping, and "break downs." <strong>Seventh grade me was stoked. Twenty three-year-old me was tired.</strong> After about five songs we left the front and moved to the back. </p> <p>All in all the night was awesome but really weird. It was the first time I've ever not smelled pot, but cigarettes inside a venue. We almost got in a fight, too, because a couple of girls didn't understand that there was no room for us to move so that they could stand with their boyfriends. Graves is a well known Republican and Ron Paul supporter.</p> <p><strong>For All The Wrong Reasons: </strong>The Dethklok and Lamb of God tour <a href="http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2012/07/lamb_of_god_det.html">has been cancelled</a> due to the incarceration of Lamb of God's singer Randy Blythe in the Czech Republic. The photo would have been better if the cat was wearing a sweater.</p> <p><strong>Caught Cold Handed:</strong> A fan that was standing front row at an Iron Maiden concert got called out hard by lead singer Bruce Dickinson, "<a href="http://www.metalsucks.net/2012/07/23/who-texts-during-iron-maiden-anyway/">You've been texting for the last three songs. You're a wanker</a>." Yet I am constantly surprised that there hasn't been any "Riot Grrl" blogs, Girl Rock Camp postings, or really any articles about this band Cherri Bomb. </p> <p>The group consists of four girls <strong>between the ages of 14 and 16 years old</strong> and they shred! They weren't started by a scouting agent or a talent show, but instead by guitarist Julia Pierce, who, at the age of 11, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FU0uAQcCus">flyered all over Los Angeles to meet other girls to play music with</a>. According to the band's bio, other guitarist Miranda Miller was able to read music at the <a href="http://cherribombband.com/bio/index.html">age of four</a>.</p> <p>After four years of being a band, they have an EP titled <em>Stark</em> and a full length that just came out called <em>This Is the End of Control</em>. They have exploded in the past couple of months, opening for Smashing Pumpkins and the Foo Fighters (probably since they covered "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB2ELkIzWQ0">Pretender</a>"). Granted, it helps that their manager is Samantha Maloney who has drummed for Hole, Motley Cr&#252;e, and Eagles of Death Metal.</p> <p>So what's up? These girls don't wear too-revealing clothes on stage and they write their own songs (which aren't bad). So why is no one talking about them?
