For HB2563 you neglect to mention the $10,000 threshold for the tax to kick in is for a joint return. For individual filers like myself the threshold is $5,000. I currently make about $60,000 and the most I ever made was about $70,000 a year thanks to a bonus. I currently have a modest amount of unrealized capital gains in excess of $5,000 in an unsheltered acount with money I earned and that I put at risk. Please drop the arguement that the tax will only impact the only the wealthiest 3%.

Does this include hybrid tomoatoes and anything made from them? If so, then everything tomato will have a label, because every single tomato anyone has ever eaten for at least the last two centuries has been a genetically modified organism.

When I approach an intersection with caution and cyclists (who should stop as well then get the right of way) blast through without yielding, I get a little upset at the whining. Mandatory abortions and medical marijuana for republicans, and then put them on a bicycle.

I've been riding a bike since I was twelve. That's fifty years of biking. I also drive. I joined a bike club. Sometimes I have to drive to get to the ride. I have driven from Spokane to Vashon to take a boat to Blake Island and go mountain biking.

I feel uncomfortable going over twenty miles per hour on a side street. We had a meandering dirt road full of potholes. Everybody drove real slow. Now we have an urban street. Everybody speeds everywhere. There is no serenity and nobody waves anymore. Be careful what you ask for.

We get five cents credit for every grocery bag we reuse but they don't last forever. And we do have reusable bags. I carry an extra rucksack in my bicycle bag so I can pick up groceries on my way home from a ride.

One day I did all my shopping by bike. I planned my route so I would get the small light items first and saved the big stuff and frozen foods for the last stop. I had my basket and backpack full and grocery bags hanging from the handlebars. It didn't seem to take any longer and I got some exercise. It seemed to take all day when I would drive the car anyway.

I don't beong to any organized political party, I'm a democrat.

#32, we'll just have to agree to disagree about the over-caution issue. As it concerns bike licensing, you are preaching to the choir. I think they ought to be treated like motorcycles for licensing purposes, with an exemption for riders under 18 who are in school.

But I also think it's a side issue. To me, the main event is this irrational faith in fixed-rail mass transit. I believe that Portland will eventually abandon the white elephant it has built.

In cities with the density to support meaningful commuter rail networks, such as Boston or Chicago, those systems are in financial crisis. Boston just announced that it will be raising commuter rail fares by 40% and cutting night and weekend service, which was pretty much skeletal to begin with.

If they are doing this in East Coast cities far more affluent and densely populated than Seattle or Portland, the rail fetishists here should be looking for other solutions. But there is no sign of their even considering that. For them, it's full steam ahead, right towards the cliff.

Very strange.

I used to make it my mission to take people shooting who had an aversion to guns. As an NRA trained instructor, I know how to teach people to shoot. If you do it gradually with no blame and correct major flaws in their technique, they generally have a great time and if they don't become pro-gun, they can at least get the knee-jerk reaction out of their legs.

#28, drivers here aren't nearly as cautious as they were 20 years ago. It's a matter of attrition; those old Norwegians in Ballard, they of 15 mph in the left lane with their right blinker on, have been dying off.

We still have way too many people lingering in the left lane on the freeways, but speeds have risen where possible. The idea of different driver testing is one of those Worthy Goals, but it wouldn't make much difference given that you only get tested once.

HB1217 comes from the cyclista lobby. They want to make it as hard as they can to own a car here. They hope that people will demand more fixed rail systems that we'll never be able to afford, and which reflect a cityscape that existed only in the East and Midwest, and even there was outdated after the 1970s.

It's a weird mindset: part nostalgia, part rail fetish, part liberal Puritanism, part the architect/planner's lust for a retro-moderne city that existed in the sci-fi films and literature of the 1940s through the 1970s. In short, a geek's vision strictly from books and movies.

The remarkable aspect of it is that they've been able to con so many people into voting for rail lines, and for politicians who will enact their "war on cars." They do it by spinning a fictional vision of a smoothly operating city that will never exist. It's a fantasy world, and people need to be made to see that it won't happen.

There are alternatives that make much more sense and can actually happen over the next few decades: electric cars and remote guidance of individual vehicles. Google already has this up and running on a test bed in California. It can provide all of the benefits that the transit types say they want, while preserving the messy personal freedom that, in the end, the cyclistas, New Ubanists, and mass transit fetishists absolutely hate.
HB 1217 is short-sighted and backwards ass, which seems to play right into the Stranger review board. The last thing Seattle needs is to slow down traffic (people here drive so cautiously it's infuriating, even as a bicyclist I find it annoying). You start screwing with the already stressed flow of traffic and you're likely to just create more mayhem.

On the East Coast, you respect the fact that cars are bigger than you and will kill you if you get in their way and ride accordingly. Seattlites, are cavalier about their surroundings when en route. I don't know how many times I've almost hit a pedestrian crossing against the light and they don't even acknowledge I'm there. Many bicyclists are no different, assuming that you'll negotiate them, not vice a versa, which to me is completely insane. If you're riding a bike in the city, you better be on point at all times or else you shouldn't be riding.

If I were to suggest a solution, it would be to utterly revamp the DMV and the way in which drivers are tested. There are so many basic concepts of safe driving that are not taught, and should be.

The fun part is the hypocrisy. The same people who told the Roosevelt neighborhood that they were rich old NIMBY racists because they didn't want 65-foot buildings next to their high school turn right around and want Miss Grundy in any neighborhood to be able to get the city to cut the speed limit to 20 mph in front of her house.

The cyclistas hate cars and so does the mayor. But we hate the mayor, and we'll get him out of there in 2013. Question is how much damage will the fucker do in the meantime?
