Thanks much. The city is not interested, but people are.

I was born in Seattle in 1957. The first clue I had to that something about me was different was when Catholic kids roughed me up in 8th grade and exposed me to new words, "kike" and "hebe", though they didn't define them. It dawned on me that we were Jewish toward the end of high school. I began to realize there were other Jews in my class (of 1975) at Roosevelt, though they were in different social circles. I didn't actually learn anything about Judaism till a few years later when I transferred to Stanford and had a Jewish roommate.

What's weird is how Jewish my identity is. I'm not religious or theistic, but I'm much more comfortable with a Jewish wife and avoiding Christmas. I rarely go to synagogue, disliking its Hebrew and prayers, but I feel I belong. They're "my people." (It helps that it's a reform synagogue.)

I don't think there's anything significant about identity. It's just there. We rarely, if ever, shape it consciously. It's like emotions. They're just there, and we hold them as tremendously important, but it's just part of our machinery. Perhaps its purpose, in evolution, was to help us connect to our tribe, to stay loyal. Perhaps by learning "belonging", we learn to extend it to others.

Thanks for connecting.

@22: LOL! I also know my lineage in extreme detail, and I'm Scottish/Ulster Scot, Welsh, Swedish, Sapmi (inhabitants of the far north of Scandinavia) and Norwegian.

@5: Wrong. Assimilation was the rule in certain places, such as the Middle East and China, but in Europe they largely kept to themselves and took advantage of the early Christian prohibition on lending to take over the financial industry, which is why we generally associate them with cities, where the banks are, also why Spain immediately fell in to economic decline with the coming of the Spanish Inquisition. Were it not for persecution of Jews, the Industrial Revolution would probably have taken place in Catalonia, 150 years before, where it had already begun and got cut short.

@24: Comment 10: That's good to hear. IME non-observant Jews tend to be extremely grumpy, and understandably so, considering as they've effectively given up on life in a sense.

Comment 23 & @23: I'm pretty sure it's mostly conducted by hispanics and blacks. The only place I know of where hispanics and blacks are NOT the majority of criminals is the Puget Sound, where (especially outside of Seattle) criminals tend to be poor white rednecks (named Bubba) hotwiring cars. What 23 may be responding to though is the East Coast Old Boys Club.

Comment 24: That discussion (God in the Jewish texts [including Talmud], Jew and Gentile) is both very interesting and very complex. Virtually all the positions attempt to simplify it too much. I won't discuss it too much here because it would be a distraction, but we'll leave it at its not easy to understand and might well take a lifetime to completely understand.
Mercer Island had a HUGE population of Jews back when I was growing up there. One thing that's interesting though is how different the Jews out on Mercer Island are from the ones here on the East Coast where I now live: Mercer Island Jews tend to be MUCH more religiously conservative, are often politically conservative, and actually have a pretty substantial Western side in them well beyond what you would generally find in residents of the Seattle area. Virtually all of them own guns (usually 4 or 5 - I myself learned how to shoot from going to the range with a Jewish friend) and the sort of complaining, self-hating, grumpy nature you associate with East Coast Jews is nowhere to be found. They tend to be very happy and friendly people actually. On the flip side, a lot of the ethnic treasures you find in east coast Jewish neighborhoods (the delis, bakeries et cetera) you don't find there, but they actually know their own religion a lot better. East coast Jews are more often then not atheists.

@10 I wouldn't say that observant life is -difficult- here in Seattle, but I'd say that it can be challenging. I chose to become observant here in Seattle after living here for five years "out in the world". The observant communities here are very welcoming and kind.

@23 I'm pretty sure the lionshare of crime in South Florida (where I came from) is conducted by a highly diverse ethnic background.

@24 We are, in fact, human. We just follow a stricter set of rules because we feel it brings us closer to -our- Father in heaven. No, you can't borrow money. Go get a job.

I made the mistake of relocating ten years ago from my "beloved Seattle" to Palm Beach County, FL for the sunny weather. The sunshine is under a constant shadow here thanks to the white collar criminal Jews, their home base being Boca Raton (when they are not in Manhattan conniving). 35% of the local fulltime population is Jewish. And when their friends and relatives (snowbirds) from NJ show up during the winter, the Jewish whining and conniving is horrible. Thank your lucky stars those of you fortunate to be in the Puget Sound area. I envy you, and someday hope to return to Seattle from what the locals here call Crime County.

The article is not only well-written, it's extremely informative. For a mid-western boy in Indiana who knows almost nothing about Jews, I found it to be quite good reading. I have two friends who are Jewish (one here and one in San Diego) and I tell them all the time how jealous I am. They have roots, long traditions spanning thousands of years, they know their lineage and so much more.

What do I have?

The best my parents could tell me was that they "think we may be Scotch or English, but we're not sure" and that doesn't come with any kind of solid traditions other than eating a lot of beef and getting drunk - something almost every American is good at.

As much as many minorities want to be known for something other than their race and possibly may want to assimilate, we non-minorities (exactly what is that? Were not the Irish, Germans, Swedish and English all minorities here at one point 200-some years ago?) want to have some kind of cultural back-story or ethnic heritage to hang our hat on. The most I can look back on with some nostalgia is the fact that most of my overweight family loves to eat really odd things from Pennsylvania like scrapple, lebanon belogna and birch beer.
Great article, thanks a lot. I was raised in Germany in an atmosphere of well-disguised "positive" racism as in "jewish people are interesting and everything they do is interesting", and we owe them this appreciation as some kind of redemption from what happened during the holocaust. This attitude was engrained in me and it took me many years to understand that something is kinda off about it and it seems like the people you encountered aren't getting it either. And while OF COURSE it is better to elevate someone you don't know than to despise of someone you don't know, it is nevertheless an attitude of well-meant pity, and not just viewing someone as a fellow person. In contrast, in the 4 years of living here in Seattle, the fact that someone is jewish not being the first thing i learn about that person, this normalcy about social interactions here has been immensely liberating and who knows, maybe there is still hope for the old world and even Seattle hipsters..

Ugh. Every minority in every population has to deal with stupid questions and heavy handed attempts at humor by "down wit' da (blank)" friends. Is it really something to bitch about in print, though? When my mexican friend calls me a skin, I call her a wetback. When my jewish friend says every time he looks at a dreamcatcher he thinks of me, I say that every time I do my taxes I think of him. Give as good as you get, and laugh about it. I'm sure my great aunt who was unknowingly sterilized by the government would disapprove, but it's my shift as well as yours now. Remember, angels have wings because they take themselves lightly.

This is a fascinating essay, a masterful blend of the personal and the academic, and it has made me think much more carefully about my past experience as a young Jew living in Seattle than I ever thought about it at the time (sadly). My desire to return to the city is complicated by the paradox of trying to negotiate an integrated, if not wholly assimilated, Jewish life in a very non-Jewish city, and wanting to be a tiny part of filling the existing void.

The obnoxious anti-Semitic comments posted here, however (yeah, I'm looking at you, too, "entitled jewboy"), make me want to crawl into a cave.

I recently moved to Seattle from the bay area. I'm Jewish and was happy to find that my new neighborhood (Ravenna) has it's own Judaica shop, bagel shop and many many Jews. I'm surprised that Ravenna, which is something of a Jewish neighborhood, wasn't mentioned in this article. Or maybe it was and I missed it?

The author should remember that assimilation has been the rule for Jews in all places throughout history, and not the exception. The fact that there is a small population of jews who still have a memory of their roots is not disheartening.

Also to be celebrated is the club-footed attempts of their non-Jewish peers to indicate their awareness of their presence. Anti-semitism is not evidenced by such ignorance, and American Jews are not alone in discovering how to feel about and deal with encounters of that sort.

As another Seattle Jew (but non-religious, and I've often struggled with what the hell my Jewish identity means) I definitely agree with points made in this article especially #3. What is with people being totally insensitive when they think they're being "down" with being Jewish? And that includes fetishizing being Jewish, like Mumbai did no offense. It creeps me out that people who aren't Jewish feel so comfortable making assumptions at all about what Jewish identity is like.
