For more than five years, Miami Norland has waited for a $69 million replacement campus. Roberts counts four other schools that have remodeled or replaced their buildings, such as Carol City Senior High three and half miles away.

“We’re the last of the worst,” Roberts said. “There’s always a high standard set for education, but this is what they have for our kids. I don’t know whose fault that is.”

Blame the boom-to-bust real estate cycle of the past 10 years, the recession and voters’ mandate to reduce the number of students in classrooms — all contributing to a shortage of school funds. Miami Norland highlights problems found across South Florida public schools.

Miami-Dade, the nation’s fourth-largest school district, is broke in terms of capital dollars, according to its chief financial officer, and has at least $1.7 billion on its books for unmet capital needs and deferred maintenance for its schools and facilities.

At the end of every frigin day its the everything is the excuse and "We dont know why! and we dont know how! and we need more money"

But the fact still is if you dont know why or how? how is more money going to fix anything that really needs to be fixed?

It boils down to separating Schools from Government as the same lick with seperating religion and government and religion with schools?

You children deserve an education and not a bunch of polittypiggy preachers who cant master a paint brush or a piggy bank

Basically what needs to be done in preserving the quality of our public schools and institutions of higher education is to tax the wealthy already, so that the taxpayer revenue is more reasonably balanced. Also, introduce a state income tax (yes, it's time!), increase employment, overhaul the exponentially rising payroll gap between the university presidents and custodians, and encourage voter support of our schools--at ALL levels.
Lack of education, awareness, and common sense is what makes people stupid.

they are to stupid to open a shop class that teaches basic maintenance and or Green building renovation to fix their building that has bad floors bad ceilings and bad walls.

Its like! take a home economics class and learn somfin other then how to collect taxes and wait for the brand new building or stadium that will get in the way of education?

I remember auto shop in my high school and as well wood shop and home economics.

the problem is gross frigin slobs who dont give a rusty dried up crap about education or if you kids take Satins bus to hell every day.

half the time they cant even account for expenses and the local media is happy to shadow the ignorance and ask for billions every day.

5th graders could run the show for billions less and provide a better education.

Wrong. As of 2010, 9 out of 108 assistant coaches in the SEC made more than the President. It's been a couple of years and some Alabama and LSU coaches got bonuses this year, so let's double that figure to 18. A whopping 17%, not even close to most, made more than the President. So do lots of CEO's and owners of small and medium sized businesses. So what? If they're not taking bread from the mouths of their students, SO FUCKING WHAT?

Yet more bullshit. The University of Washington is a $4.3 billion/yr enterprise, of which athletics comprises less than $70 million, or less than two percent. If anything has undue influence, it's the tangentially-related-at-best health system, little of which actually has to do with the School of Medicine, which makes up about 30% of the budget and growing.

You are completely fucking clueless about the thing you're SO ANGRY about.

Yes, our largest university has only ONE alt cert program for a person to become a teacher and it's only for people screened by a private organization.

And, to boot, they needed between 35-50 students to make this financially viable. They have 11.

So this program is costing the taxpayer (you) money so that Teach for America students can get a cheaper teaching certificate than UW students going through the College of Education so they can teach for just two years. And they're losing money on it.

His reply was to say mumble, mumble, give it a chance and should be more opportunities for people to teach as a second career. Even though the program they DO have is not for people like that.

He's not that bright when it comes to running a university.

Yes, ASSISTANT coaches. Auburn's offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn earned $1.3 mil last year.

And yet the real employees of college football -- the players -- earn no wages and have no insurance or workman's comp, even their jobs are among the most dangerous and injury-causing in the country.

The last president of the UW is of course now the head of the NCAA, which oversees this plantation. And his successor works for the football team, not the other way around. Don't ever forget that: universities are the whoremasters. We are the johns.

Nnnnnnope. If you'd ever read (or understood) an annual report you'd know this isn't the case.

If your point is ROW ROW REVOLUTION at how college athletics is run in general then direct your fire elsewhere. Very few athletic departments, even under the rules you decry, are self sustaining - in the neighborhood of twenty or so, though that will be increasing with the PAC's new TV deal.

In addition, other university departments have to PAY THEIR EMPLOYEES, and not rely almost entirely on slave labor. They also are responsible if their employees get hurt on the job, a condition that the NCAA was explicitly formed to PREVENT in athletics, so if you break your neck on the football field, you are fucked; no one is going to pay for your medical treatment or your rehabilitation or your almost certain lifetime of diminished opportunities when you die in your mid-fifties as most football players do.

As a reward for all this greatness -- slave labor, theft of resources, and physically destructive spectacle are the American Way -- it's only natural that the assistant coaches should earn as much as university presidents and the head coaches should earn as much as kings. Right? THE MONEY IS THEIRS. Right? Right?
