Vanishingly few Seattleites are aware that a club from this city won a major sports championship long before anyone associated with the 1979 Sonics was even born. In 1917, the Metropolitans became the first non-Canadian team to parade around the rink carrying the Stanley Cup. The next non-Canadian winner of the Cup didn't come until 1928.

New arenas have revenue streams the Key doesn't have (parking, better concessions, restaurants, storefront space, more luxury boxes). These revenue streams are necessary to pay current NBA player salaries. Because of this lack of revenue, an NBA team would lose money playing at the Key. Revenue from ticket sales alone isn't sufficient, even if games are sellouts. And given Key Arena's footprint, it would be nearly impossible to remodel it to make it profitable. It would make more financial sense to spend money on a new building.

@4, fortunately as the details make clear the proposal is nowhere near any shovel work. Meaning come reelection day McGinn will have been able to frame this as purely a glorious possible future success. Not that any other mayor couldn't have done as much as he so far, or be as able to not fuck up the project during its coming years of planning.
