When we point from the blog to articles like this, we usually route the peanut gallery into the original thread to concentrate the indignation in a single location. It tastes better that way. I never said you had to be an opera singer to review opera. Most renowned opera critics are NOT. I am just mystified as to how someone who has no musical background or real understanding of this art form is given an avenue to critique highly accomplished singers. I was merely pointing out that you are ignorant, and that anyone who reads this should take it with a large grain of salt. Careers can be harmed needlessly by bad reviews. (You were giving the male lead a BAD review, by the way). Thankfully, I don't think anyone in the opera scene in Seattle will be stupid enough to take this article seriously.

I thought Burden was the best part of Orphée et Eurydice because at least there was a handsome guy to watch while everything else was happening. There were a lot of cool ideas with the direction and costuming that almost worked. At first I thought it was weird that they left out the whole Orpheus-being-the-best-musician-ever part of the myth, but I guess playing that shit down is a good idea if the music in the opera isn’t going to be completely thrilling. Also, Eurydice is a nag, the librettist or someone changed the ending of the myth (what?!) and the audience on opening night thought the mention of the god Hymen was completely hilarious, which was a bit cringe-inducing.

Dominic, what exactly was your point in sending people over here? You basically asked people to weigh in, they weighed in, and now you don't like the way they weighed in. I'm not sure I understand.

For the record, I agree that you don't have to be an opera scholar to write a review of an opera so long as you can appreciate the form. And yes, you gave a very nice review. But you do have to admit that believability of the acting in opera is definitely secondary to the singing by necessity. How else can you watch a soprano singing full throat as Violetta while she is supposedly wasting away from consumption?

The problem is that opera is an inherently ridiculous art form. The magic is that it still works; it still hits you in an emotional place. But you have to look through the ridiculousness to get there. It's not just the music; the drama is a big part of it -- opera on record is not the same. But the dramatics are very far removed from realism, even in a realistic staging. This is difficult to convey in a review without sounding flippant, as here, or stuffy. But I don't think Dominic's review is inherently bad at all, aside from the attempts at reaching out for pop-culture analogies (like "Jim Carrey") which fall a little flat. But not as flat as the usual review.

I have a question about this whole line of thinking: How does the opera intend to attract new audiences, if every opera review has to be steeped in the language and context of opera? Where is the entry point for new opera-goers? Stranger readers are not (in general) the sort of people who have season tickets to the opera. So if Dominic's review was the kind of inside-baseball review that everyone here seems to want, it stands to reason that Stranger readers would be less likely to read it.

I've seen a couple of operas in Seattle, and frankly, I think opera fans should be clamoring for different kinds of reviews. The opera can be a great time, but you wouldn't know it by reading most opera reviews, which have been starched to death. I don't think a review has to be dumb to be attractive to general interest readers, but I do think it has to be interesting. Most opera criticism, the kind of criticism people here seem to be demanding, is just not interesting for general interest readers.

Further, the suggestion that opera doesn't belong in the theater section strikes me as ludicrous. What would a Stranger opera section cover on a weekly basis? How many outlets for opera are there in town?

@3 Most of the reviews of Orphee et Eurydice were far less positive than Dominic's, my own included (http://www.cornichon.org/2012/02/lyre-ly…). The Seattle Times review by Bernard Jacobsen was, in fact, quite critical of William Burden's performance.

But, for what it's worth, I did my research 'n stuff on this opera's place in history. And in case anyone missed it, I gave it a positive review (save for my distaste for a weak vocal and theatrical performance by the lead).

@5 it's the same argument that has come and gone with the Stranger for decades (seriously) about their modern dance reviews. The heyday of dance reviews in the Stranger were during Bret Fetzer's days, and the nadir was in the mid or late '90s when a dance review started with a paragraph about how much the reviewer hated dance.
Clearly this was just a ploy to drive readers to this article and to bump posts. So, you know, well played and all that...

      Mr. Holden,
Opera lovers are a fiercely protective crowd & I have to agree with genevieve. Tomes have been written about Orefo/Orphee and its place in the opera canon. Have you read anything about how the French version came to be? Or why the original version was meant to "revolutionize" opera. Tackling a review of this opera right out of the gate seems impertinent. If you dislike a particular performer in a role, that is a different matter. But again, how many others have you heard/seen of Orphee? (Not Orfeo-that's almost a different opera and rarely sung by a tenor). I have listened to the radio broadcast & while Mr. Burden is not astonishing in the role, he gives a committed vocal performance and is otherwise fine in the role. (I only heard it - I did not see it).
If you are an opera recordings seeker, I recommend listening to Orphee sung by Leopold Simoneau for a classically elegant version of this iconic, rule breaking opera. Happy listening.

Don't be a child, Dominic. Asking that someone be familiar with a genre before critiquing it is a fair criticism. Posting on slog that you're not an opera singer is just silly. Your analogies don't seem fair either. I don't think you have to have held public office before you can write about politics, but maybe you should know something about politics before you write something so that people who are reading your work can gain something from it. You don't have to be a supreme court justice to comment on the bench, but it might be helpful to your readers if you are at least familiar with how the judicial system works. Same goes here -- if you want to write a critique of an opera, it might be helpful to be familiar with opera. If it was your first night out at the opera, just say so.
