"Fathi is everything the state legislature currently lacks: She's young and Iranian American, and she's running because women and people of color are woefully underrepresented in state politics."

Um Our State Legislature lacks a hella more then that?

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/De…

As at least half of the territory represented is under water I guess we need to ask the fish what they feel is correct representation?

She is kind of cute and she at least wants to represent something? that makes her head and shoulders above the rest?

http://www.voteforgael.org/?page_id=7
http://nickcail.com/
https://twitter.com/#!/noelframe

"All of our legislators look the same," Fathi reflects after watching a recent senate budget debate. "Here they are, making ridiculous cuts, balancing the budget on the backs of people of color and the poor—people who weren't anywhere in the room—and I thought, 'This is embarrassing.' Then I realized: These are my people. I can represent them."

I concur.
Cienna, get a grip. We know that enthusiasm is admirable in the young, but get a grip. The person leaving this seat is a woman. The 36th isn't some Mississippi North--Until two years ago we were represented by all women. Frankly, as Joel Connelly wrote, the winner exchanges a lifetime legislative seat for a monthly grilling by the 36th District Democratic Precinct Organization which is a fucking lot more concerned about issues than color. The issues you mentioned are lightweight shit compared to several very important ones: Will Sahar push hard for an income tax and drug legalization?

@1 & @4 - Apparently you were unable to focus past Sahar's picture, so this comment probably won't help. But if you'd read the artice, you'd notice (as I did) that it gives a great overall impression of Sahar's political priorities. Cienna mentions Sahar's active support of immigrant's rights (including multilingual legal clinics and sentencing reductions for gross misdemeanors to avoid unjust deportation) and helping keep vulnerable homeless folks safer at night. The article also specifies that Ms. Fathi is concerned about kids dropping out of school and sex trafficking. I'll bet her website has more info, plus a way to contact her with specific questions. Maybe it even offers some helpful charts and diagrams for non-readers.

First I thought "Wait, is 'People of Color' still a thing?"

Then I wiki'd

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Person_of_c…

And it was slightly more complex than I thought. Honestly I never hear people use that term, I'm going to have to start listening more carefully.

PS I asked my wife how she felt as a person of color today, she said "very colorful."
