In fact, I've only known one single Indian guy in my entire software career, and it was NOT due to a lack of persistence on his parents part. He eventually succumbed, and now his days of going out for lunch are over.

One thing that Vancouver has that Seattle doesn't and never will, however, is large numbers of NON-ENGINEER Indians. Vancouver and Toronto are global magnets for Indian immigrants of all classes, which does lead to a greater diversity of food offerings, not just cloth-napkin joints.

For starters, Seattle could really use a few branches of the globally ubiquitous Nando's Chicken, or some local entrepreneur's version of the same. Sadly, Seattle's immigrants are mostly shut out of the city's lifeless retail scene except on the periphery. What you are really talking about when you bemoan the lack of Indian restaurants is the lack of cheap usable retail spaces where entrepreneurs can get started. In Seattle, it's impossible to find space that is both small and crummy enough to be affordable but also where sufficient quantities of people with money go, because all the people with money are white, and won't go to weird neighborhoods (which barely exist). A recent immigrant from Michoacan or Bangladesh or Guizhou isn't going to be able to get a tiny storefront in Wallingford.

@27, is obviously correct, as Microsoft has more Indian engineers working for them than you can shake a stick at, and always has, whatever this idiotic article claims. There are thousands of them, and have been for decades. They live and work on the east side, and never come into Seattle, and thus all of the good Indian is on the east side. Spice Route in Crossroads is excellent, and full to bursting with East Indians, as is Mayuri in both Bellevue and Bothell. These restaurants are as good as anything in Vancouver with one exception:

No restaurant in Seattle, Indian or otherwise, can touch Vij's, on W 11th just east of Burnside. But that's not Seattle's fault; the fact is, it's one of the great restaurants of the world, and no Indian restaurant ANYWHERE can touch it.

I think you will find that virtually 100% of the tikka masala and balti joints in the UK are Bangladeshi, not actually Indian, whatever it says on the sign; indeed, not just Bangladeshi but almost entirely from the region of Sylhet in the far northeast of that country. Tikka Masala was invented by a Bangladeshi immigrant to Glasgow, Scotland in the 1960s.

Cedar in the U District is OK, but you should be aware that the owner keeps all the tips. All of them.
Charles would have his mind blown by spending a couple of hours hanging out in Crossroads Mall.

This is a post that can only have been written by a person who never leaves the downtown core. Also, while it might be "unusual" to advertise in this way, there are currently thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of people of Indian descent living, working, and eating in Redmond and around the Eastside. If you are going all the way to Vancouver for good Indian cuisine, you are an idiot.

Traveler's Thali House in Beacon Hill has really nice veggie Indian food, with rotating dishes each month. The owners and cooks are white folks, but they do seem to know what they are doing and I see plenty of folks from India in there eating, so they seem to think it's legit. It's open W-Sunday until 9pm. Beers are affordably priced as is the food. It's a couple of blocks from the Light Rail and also accessible off the 36 bus.

I agree that Pabla in Renton is good too. Punjabit Sweets down in Kent is also good. The spot in the strip mall near Trader Joe's on Bell Red Road and Northup Way in Bellevue is also good. I don't mind the spot in Northgate that someone else mentioned (Masala). Not a bad buffet. I quite like the buffet at Roti down in lower QA too (it's better than the Northgate spot).

The spot out in Bellevue at the Cross Roads Mall (on the north side near the licensing spot) it also good, and definitely a different style than a lot of the other spots in Seattle.

I'm sure Seattle probably isn't a great Indian food town and I have heard that there's some Indian up in Vancouver that is supposed to be amazing. But I haven't had it, and for the most part, I don't feel deprived of tasty options in Seattle. But I definitely might feel differently if I'd had the stuff in BC.

The Indian programmers don't live in Seattle. They live in Bothell, Kenmore, Woodinville and Redmond. Woodinville has nightlife that play nothing but bhangra and cinemas that play nothing but Bollywood. Get out of the city Chuck, you might need a car.

Also, why is this news? Isn't Microsoft FTE like 30% Indian born now? They've been importing for twenty years. I'm a born US citizen, and I've had job recruiters hang up on me when they find out I don't need my visa sponsored. I might ask for a living wage.
