Yes, we absolutely do train our police about other political ideologies: Survivalism, religious cultism, anti-immigration and white power, anti-abortionism, you name it.

Generally speaking, people who aren't opposed to having a police force to begin with aren't opposed to having a police force trained to deal with political extremists who seem likely to act on their beliefs.

"All enemies foreign and domestic," as the line goes.

I can not fault the government for wanting information on a group that desires the destruction of the government, but the scope of the subpeona really should be limited to footage of overtly illegal activities, not just people protesting or organizing.

Outside of that scope, is is a government spying on its people, in violation of the constitution.

Ostensibly a drama somewhat based on the Valerie Plame affair, the majority of the movie is about the struggle of the reporter to maintain integrity in a dirty world that tries to break her down.

It's really a great movie...

What possibly could be SPD's motivation to blow this tiny May Day episode out of proportion? Could it be to advance their agenda of greater citizen surveillance? Or maybe to gain sympathy for a department that teeters on the edge of a DOJ crackdown?

This police department is not to be trusted, and any news agency that willfully surrenders documentation to SPD should be equally scorned.

But does anyone else find it extremely ironic that the very group that wants to see ALL the footage from that day is the same group that constantly fights ANY release of their own video off the cameras on their cars?

The SPD should also be very careful that by being so heavy handed COMMANDING footage that during the next civil unrest we don't find the media targeted.
