Most SLU streetcar back-ups are due to cars who don't understand not entering an intersection when they can't clear it, not any fault of the streetcar. Considering it's frequently packed these days, I don't think the SLU streetcar can be considered a failure. It just took time to catch on.

I agree that pedestrian crossing around the streetcar and lightrail is generally terrible. In the case of crossing Mercer, the streetcar prioritization actually *helps* pedestrians, because it makes the light change and pedestrians are allowed to cross with it (unlike the crossing at Fairview/Valley, where it gets a whole cycle to itself and pedestrians have to wait for the next one).

Northbound had to wait in the left traffic lane to get to the reversal because the Southbound was unable to clear the shared track due to backed up traffic.
Busses, being able to maneuver around obstacles, would not have exacerbated the congestion.
Luckily I was able to pedal by on the sidewalk. The frustrated drivers were looking to vent their roadrage.

@3, what signal interrupts would those be, Will? Any bus? Don't answer that; you have no idea what you're talking about. As always.

The problem with the streetcar at these critical intersections is that they ARE, in fact, "transit stuck in traffic". The city street grid gets very weird around these intersections, and if you screw with the light timing, which is already straining to meet capacity, too much, just for the streetcar, you're not just going to make drivers and bus riders impatient, you're going to cause backups and gridlock that extends across the city.

Bromides like "rail works in Seattle (just like in other cities!)" are meaningless. Superimposing a one-MPH streetcar onto a very difficult stretch of roadway actually makes building a fucking subway system more difficult, not easier.
