I'm with #1. As someone who doesn't give a fig about fashion, the thing I love about Vidal Sassoon is the stories of how as a part of a gang of poor Jews in Britain he would have street battles with Mosley's blackshirts after WWII. Serious moral courage there. If you get a chance, you should listen to the BBC Archive Hour of April 19, 2008, entitled "A Rage In Dunston", an excellent hour-long documentary about the 43 group. Sadly, I can't find a copy online.

If you haven't already, find and watch "Vidal Sassoon: The Movie" to get an understanding of how important he was to creating the creative whirl around the sixties. To my mind, the most important figures in that scene were not the famous pop stars but Sassoon, Mary Quant, John Stephen for men, and gallery owner Robert Fraser, plus of course all the anonymous Mods and other beautiful creatures who filled out the scene. But Sassoon was there first, in the 50s, bashing in the (metaphorical) shop windows of postwar rationing Britain.

A great fellow. The world will never see the likes of him again, or even his category -- an important hairdresser? Impossible today.

I thought I remembered hearing somewhere, and now Wiki seems to confirm, that he was kind of a badass. Beyond just his hair innovations, which seemed pretty damn impressive. At 17 joined the underground 43 Group, breaking up fascist meetings in post-WWII London, then joined the Haganah and fought to win Israeli independence in 1948.
