We've been doing lots of Mars rover projects in the previous years.

But why haven't we been doing more (robot) Moon landers?

It seems like it would be a whole lot easier, and we could along the way develop more robust technology for colonization and so on...before going all the way to Mars.

Shouldn't we by now at have tens or hundreds of tiny "Google bots" doing a camera surface level map around the Moon?
