This could also be due to the fact that a career representative like Jay Inslee, decent man though he may be, fails to excite younger, less level-headed liberals, while McKenna's unpredictable, angry quasi-Objectivism (along with a ton of spillover from national-level conservative campaigning) is turning out the naive, extremist young conservatives who, like, read this AMAZING book called The Fountainhead and it just totally changed the way they think about all the bullshit in the world.

To many moderates, Islee just seems like Gregoire 2.0 with pants, and while Mckenna smells like a retrobate republican to those who really pay attention to politics, he's been effective at marketing himself as a new and improved product of sorts and that positioning has gone over well with moderates and independents who don't want a repeat of business as usual.
