It has never been the case that cocaine was shipped "pure" from the source.

In it's pure form Cocaine HCl is incredibly hygroscopic. This means that it absorbs all the moisture it can from the atmosphere. This property leads to the Cocaine HCl being a soft, wet paste.

So basically you have to cut coke with something unless you want to ship a wet paste. If you try to ship it wet, the moisture increases the weight and makes it more difficult to handle.
