yes, the democrats should happily admit they're socialists. what's the problem? scared of their own collectivist policies? they are social democrats in their hearts but afraid to say so. get some balls. be like europe. we put in real social democracy in germany after ww2, we put in the worker councils, we set them up and voila, it works. works purty damn good. it works in sweden, france, denmark, england, even cameron isn't dismamtling national health care service. in france they give you $100 a month for child care vouchers so you don't have to use the state run child care if you don't wan't, that's the "conservative" position in france! it's far left compared to us. the best economy and society is about half government, this is so obvious the dems need to embrace it and tout it and make it work and stop doing things like touting tax cuts the way obama does in his five point plan for our economy, it's mainly tax cuts for small business. I am a small business, the marginal tax rate has NOTHING to do with wether or not I get up to go to work and make profit. hello! I am not going to give up my profit if it's taxed three more points!

My generation certainly hasn't heard that- remember, the youngest people to vote in this election were porn in 1994. 25-30 year olds might have vague cold war memories, but 18-24 year olds? The Cold War is all history to us, no memories. Socialism, communism... they're not current, and the only socialism my generation knows is the dreaded "socialized medicine" that every civilized country has other than us.

      @2 So Barney's a socialist?

I'm surprised to hear that socialism's reputation is not that bad. I recently had a discussion with a co-worker who believes America should have more socialism, precisely because she's convinced that pure capitalism will be ruin of the everyman for the benefit of the wealthy. Socialism, in contrast, is the one political philosophy, she said, that takes interest in her welfare.

I reached that conclusion years ago, but I thought that I had to go the depths of Capitol Hill to find others who agreed. Haven't we all learned, growing up, that socialism and communism and anarchism are all one and the same and are inherently anti-American? Apparently, I need to give people more credit for reaching their own conclusions.

I like Krugman's spin on how demonizing the social safety net is backfiring on conservatives. It never occurred to me.

      @9 exactly. The same unbridled markets that conservatives love to rhapsodize about just, less than 5 years ago, nearly destroyed the global economy and set wealth creation back by half a generation. I can't imagine why young people today would embrace a system that offers a bare modicum of security and healthcare while they cope with 10% + unemployment, student loans, and a host of other problems. The mind boggles.

      The conservative pundits are now lamenting that 50% of Americans are "takers." Because why else would anyone vote against a serial liar with no identifiable position on any topic?

If the conservative movement is as dead as they claim in their post-election laments, maybe it's because they routinely insult half the fucking hard-working country. Do they think they're getting converts by calling a single mom with two jobs a taker?

And, yes, there are takers, but they're equally spread across the political spectrum. Go to rural Kentucky. Or Wall Street.

The sad thing is that these conservatives actually believe it. They're in a bubble that no amount of reality can pop.

      Holy shit. By condemning as "socialism" the ordinary, reasonable government programs that make capitalism possible, the idiot conservatives have accomplished the previously impossible. They've removed the patina of "Red Menace" from the word, defanging it for a whole generation of Americans.

Way to double-down, wingnuts! Have any more toes to shoot off?

Seriously. During the Civil Rights era, all Civil Rights protesters were labeled socialists. It didn't matter what kind of government they actually envisioned; simply contesting the status quo and asking for justice is "socialism" to those morons.

      As a former member of a socialist organization (ah, college!), it always struck me how little these people know about the actual principles and objectives of socialism. I've been trying to come up with a concise Republican definition of the word. The best I've come up with so far is something like:

"Any position or policy that does not expressly promote zero-sum individual gain above all other objectives."

Does that sound about right?
