Not to get all picayune and gun-nutty on you, but double action revolvers aren't technically semi-automatic pistols except to the extent that they fire every time you pull the trigger. Also, the revolvers used in the old west were mostly single-action, which meant that you had manually cock the hammer between each shot. The mechanisms are different, and while they have invented speedloading devices for revolvers they are generally slower to use than the detachable magazines used by semi-automatic pistols.

Semiautomatic paramilitary assault rifles are indeed different than most semiautomatic hunting rifles - the barrels are shorter (which trades off being easier to conceal/maneuver in urban and other combat situations vs. long range accuracy) and they have detachable magazines that can hold a whole lot more bullets than, say, a Browning Automatic Rifle (not the military version) or a hunter's Remington. Splitting hairs over whether they have selective fire capability like military assault rifles kind of glosses over those facts - and they are facts.

That said, the legislation in New York that bans every gun with a capacity of over 7 shots pretty much banned almost every gun designed in the last 100 years - and also bans current owners from having them. In my view that goes much too far - and actually is the sort of "gun grab" that frothing right wingers are accusing Obama of (the proposed federal legislation is much more reasonable, though I think the roots of American gun violence go a lot deeper than whether people are allowed to have paramilitary semiautomatic rifles, Glocks with 15 round magazines, etc, and that it probably won't make much of a difference in the number of gun deaths in the US. It sure won't matter much to criminals who use guns, because last I checked, using a gun illegally is already, well, illegal).

I really don't get why right wingers think they can build campaigns on faulty data. The essence of strategy is non-partisan. No matter how you view human nature, anyone who is serious about winning wants facts, not cheerleading.

I guess the real wackos want to lose, so they can crawl into their bunker and curl up with their rifle and dream of a glorious last stand. Maybe get raptured. Creeps.

Because using a tragedy to rush through legislation quick before people have the time to sit back, think about it a bit, and realize that it's an overreaction is a great strategy. After all, it got us the PATRIOT act, so why not try it again?

Banning semi-automatic weapons? We've had semi-automatic weapons since 1885. They're not the problem here.

Or my favorite, the "gun show loophole". Guess what: Sellers at gun shows are FFLs. They are required to do (and do) background checks.

Or, my favorite, "assault weapons". Assault weapons are banned/highly regulated. They have been since 1934. Those scary things you see on the wall?" Those are rifles that, short of cosmetics, function no differently from a semi-automatic "hunting rifle". The primary difference is the black vs brown color.
