Having free public wifi hub-spots is good but it is always advice-able to be secure and safe while surfing the web on public wifi hotspots. For security and online privacy i always use "Hotspot Shield" free VPN. It is the most trusted VPN service provider i have ever used. Check it out here - http://www.hotspotshield.com

After losing half a billion dollar in Europe, Clearwire made a shameful exit from Spain last October selling the operations there, for one euro, to a couple of crooked local businessmen.

Now the Clearwire Corporation CFO (Hope Cochran) and the CAO (Steve Ednie) have been accused of fraud.
Is this a poorly run company or what.
In its current form, WiMax mostly uses 2.3ghz, 2.5ghz and 3.5 ghz technology, which does not penetrate walls and structures as well as something using 700mhz spectrum. Because its using Ghz spectrum, its only able to go about 6-8 miles. Enough to cover a city, but not a county. White Spaces, using 700mhz, will go much further and penetrate deeper. Its what was used to broadcast TV before the digital switch over.

What is Wimax?

WiMAX is an IP based, wireless broadband access technology that provides performance similar to 802.11/Wi-Fi networks with the coverage and QOS (quality of service) of cellular networks. WiMAX is also an acronym meaning "Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX).

WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system, also known as IEEE 802.16, that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks". WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 wireless local area network standard is limited in most cases to only 100 - 300 feet (30 - 100m).

This is not Clearwire or WiMax technology, its using a slice from the 700mhz spectrum, which allows for IP broadcasts of up to 20 miles. Even if the government gets blocked from installing this, cell phone companies clearly dont want a private ISP to set this up. This technology makes it too cheap to cover a wide area. Who would pay 60$ a month for 4G service, when you could get it from a local ISP for 30$.
