If you're confused about why horse meat is bad, read the link @17.
Horse owners should take care not to inhale the powder or ingest bute. Hands should be washed immediately after administering to prevent oral contamination since, in humans, bone marrow, renal, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal side effects are associated with use of this medication.
Every horse in the US (or Mexico, which gets most of its horses for slaughter from the US) is chock full of this stuff. And plenty more besides.

No, it's not like the antibiotics in beef. The difference is in what is put into animals raised for food and animals not raised for food. You don't want to be eating the latter.

Like so many have mentioned, the thing about it is that the horse meat is also from an unknown source and the risk is that it may have medicines which would make the meat unsuitable for consumption.

The problem is that meat is marketed as a lower price than it can be produced. So there is cash to be made from those that know that if you buy a horse destined for the glue factory cheap you can pawn it off as meat and sneak the meat into the ordinary delivery chain.

As for horses - here in Sweden the older generation probably wouldn't eat horse meat (since its a tool or a pet) but most younger than 80 probably wouldn't care.

@6: has it right. The problem isn't with necessarily with eating horse; it's that the horsemeat was held to different standards and might not have been intended to be in the human food supply.

I'd have no problem eating a horse, as long as I knew that was what was on the menu from the start, and that it didn't have any additions to it not found in my regular, meaty diet.
Isn't part of it cultural? Or to put it another way, even if you're a vegetarian, how would you feel if at the next family Thanksgiving dinner, your parents prepare a tofurkey for you but brought out a roasted cat or dog or guinea pig for all their children and in-laws?

But I think one other problem is that if you're buying something labeled as beef, you don't want it to be other meat.

I was wondering what's wrong with horse as well. They also keep saying trace but not explaining why that's bad. Maybe they're trying to say the plants don't clean their machines? Which could be a concern. Or maybe meat mixing is bad for religious reasons? I don't get it.

Now, human DNA...that I could see being a problem.
