United States, 2009 | 86 min. | Dir. Jennifer Kroot
A documentary about the bizarrely prolific low-budget filmmaker freaks (and twins) George and Mike Kuchar. Their style is immediately recognizable even if you’re not familiar with the films (melodrama, aliens, bright costumes, cheap sets, all of it shot on camcorders). This film is, in a way, actually more about how the Kuchars unlocked the imaginations of indie filmmakers who came after them, like John Waters and Guy Maddin and Atom Egoyan (who do much of the talking). If you’re into film history, it’s edifying.
