Netherlands, 2008 | 85 min. | Dir. Mijke de Jong
This film could only be made by a woman. Watch it and you will see what I mean. No man could get so deep into, one, the developing mind of a 13-year-old girl, two, the relationship between an older sister and a younger one, and, three, a mother and daughter relationship. This is precisely Katia’s Sister’s achievement: a profoundly female understanding of a very difficult setting—a small Amsterdam apartment inhabit by three Russian woman, two of whom (the mother and the eldest sister) are trapped in the sex industry. The young girl seems smart and independent but in reality—or, better yet, once you see her soul—it becomes clear that her future is not bright but bleak.
