Marcello is reluctant to participate in his village’s traditional dating contest, but can’t avoid playing along this once. For one date with his first love Elena, he must win her father’s favor with the perfect present. Poor Marcello decides on an unusual gift. (The butcher’s cock. Really.) Obtaining the gift becomes a series of difficult exchanges and obligations, which fortunately steers this comedy away from romance and toward adventure. Each chore takes him further from his goal but also untangles years of village animosity and injustices. The story is simple but bright, charming and sunny, taking full advantage of colorful seaside Italy.
