Frozen River
United States, 97 min. | Dir. Courtney Hunt | Rated R
Courtney Hunt's first feature film is nothing short of indelible. Shot in sub-zero weather on Lake Champlain in northern New York, it captures flawlessly the frozen, cracking lives of two women, one living just outside the Mohawk reservation at the Canadian border with her two children (having just been left by a no-count gambling husband) and the other a young widow living alone on the reservation and struggling to regain custody of her baby son. They've fallen into the human trafficking business, the business of driving repeatedly across a frozen river with people stuffed in the trunk, and they're trying to get out.
