Alexandra The greatest film director is Andrei Tarkovsky. One of Tarkovsky’s disciples is Alexander Sokurov, the director of the well-known Russian Ark and the less-well-known Mother and Son and Father and Son. Alexandra is a movie about a babushka who visits her grandson, a soldier, at his camp in war-damaged Chechnya. It is somewhere between the sadness of Mother and Son and the passions of Father and Son. The main theme of Alexandra, the broken spirit of Russian militarism, and the floating music, the painterly cinematography, and the majestic pacing make it one of the greatest antiwar films ever made.
