Wife Trudi learns that her similarly monikered husband Rudi is ill. They go to visit their indifferent children in Berlin, then wind up on the Balkan Sea, where Trudi, not Rudi, dies. In his grief, Rudi discovers some things about his departed wife, such as her fascination with Japan. He then follows her dream to the East.
