Chris & Don: A Love Story

Dir. Guido Santi
For anyone with an interest in the lives of literary figures or gay history or the intersection of love and class, this is a must-see. It’s entirely about the relationship between the British novelist Christopher Isherwood (most famous for the books Cabaret was based on), and his longtime lover Don Bachardy, who was a teenager when they met and young enough to be his Isherwood’s son. Bachardy, who’s still alive, narrates a lot of the film. He was beautiful back in the day, as archival footage—home videos the two took of each other—attests. Cameos include Tennessee Williams and Igor Stravinsky. (Codirector Guido Santi scheduled to attend; Chris & Don will open at the Varsity on Aug 1.)
