Tilda Swinton's profundity is growing exhausting, and as a friend of experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman, she bogs down Isaac Julien’s visually arresting documentary with her epistolary narration. Much more enjoyable are interviews with Jarman himself before his 1994 death, including his recollections of a toxic Thatcherite England (he lived through what he calls "the great imperial twilight"), and clips from his wild films (especially sadistic punk movie Jubilee and The Garden, a gay passion play).
