The stage is set for Encarnación—about a washed-up actress named Erni (Silvia Pérez, embodying an excellent mix of hope and sorrow)—to be a really fine film. Her aging process is portrayed with real dignity and despair. But the plot, which finds Erni returning home to a family that can barely stand her, fizzles into a series of excuses for Pérez to emote, wrapping up with an unnecessarily ambiguous ending.
