Lars von Trier, a central figure in the Dogma 95 movement, wrote the script for this movie. The script’s subject is the education of a young director. The young director is a man who attends film school around the period that von Trier attended film school, the late ’70s. The main message that rises from Trier’s script, and is transformed into a generally enjoyable movie by Jacob Thuesen, is this: To become a successful director you must sell all of your soul.
