Tom Hanks’s son Colin, who looks quite like his dad but for a turned-up little nose, stars as law-school dropout Troy in this studiously ordinary movie about ambition, faith, and magic tricks. After giving up on the old JD, Troy signs up as road manager to the washed-up magician Buck Howard (John Malkovich). Minor failure, minor success, and tastefully shot hot-publicist sex (with Emily Blunt) ensue. The film is as inoffensive and even-keeled as its protagonist, and the only thing you’re likely to remember a week later is the single character indulgence Malkovich allows himself: a wild handshake that rolls like an earthquake and lasts so long you’d think aftershocks were involved. (Director Sean McGinly scheduled to attend.)
