Bruce LaBruce may not have made the first gay zombie film, but he’s certainly made the most substantial. Built around the life and memories of the titular alterna-zombie, Otto; or, Up with Dead People is a compelling mishmash of zombie drama, art-house pretension, queer theory, AIDS allegory, vegetarian treatise, hardcore porn, faux documentary, and a good, old-fashioned homosexual blood feast. It’s insanely inventive and, for the most part, it works. (Director Bruce La Bruce scheduled to attend.)
