Dir. Nina Paley

An inspired and lively depiction of the Sanskrit tale
Ramayana, Nina Paley’s animated film takes a hodgepodge of animation styles, tosses in a lively 1920s jazz score (with songs by Annette Hanshaw), and delivers the epic story by way of occasionally unreliable narrators. And it all works beautifully. Bouncing between ancient and modern times, the movie has creativity to spare—and is all the more impressive since Paley did all of the animation herself.
