Ugly and mean, this mystery/thriller involves one time Ukranian prostitute Irena (Xenia Rappoport), who takes a job as a cleaning woman for a well-off Italian family—and develops a particular interest in the couple’s daughter. Though director Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso, perplexingly) doesn’t spare the audience from nastiness, the film’s graphic depictions (flashbacks to Irena’s days as a prostitute are especially grim) never cross the line into being exploitive. It’s a well-made film, and Rappaport gives a hell of a performance, but it’s not a particularly enjoyable experience to sit through.
