Luke (Josh Peck) is spending his post-graduation summer peddling weed while his home life crumbles around him. Dr. Squires (Ben Kingsley) is both Luke’s therapist and his best customer. Their strange, not entirely healthy friendship is nearly derailed when Luke falls for the doctor’s beautiful daughter. Set in 1994, Jonathan Levine’s dramedy is entirely honest in its depiction of crushed dreams, irresponsible adulthood, and sad sexual yearning. The direction is stylized but not overwhelming, the performances—especially from Peck—spot-on. (Director Jonathan LEvine scheduled to attend; The Wackness should open in Seattle theaters on July 11.)
