For modern German kids, government autocracy is just another boring school topic. That is, until their teacher decides to turn his classroom into a petri dish for fascism. Uniforms are mandatory; attention is paid; discipline rules. The experiment proves way too successful—this is Germany, after all—and in the end, contaminates the entire school. Based on a real-life experiment in 1967 Palo Alto, California (and then a teen book and after-school special), the film often feels as clinical as an experiment itself, although one where the results are rigged. (Original experiment instigator Ron Jones and participant Philip Neel scheduled to attend.)
