A Wink and a Smile A survey documentary of Seattle's burlesque scene, A Wink and a Smile is also a psychological drama about 10 women who take the long-running Burlesque 101 class offered by Miss Indigo Blue (a class that has produced many of Seattle's current burlesque stars, including the Shanghai Pearl and Waxie Moon). There's lots of talk about empowerment, body issues, and the fluidity of gender and sexuality, but it doesn't feel didactic in the slightest—just ladies working it out. A naturopath tries to find her inner glamour girl, a stay-at-home mother of two wants to discover "the beauty of the sagging breast," and a taxidermist just wants to have fun. The local burlesque scene has evolved into a sophisticated, many-tentacled, and nationally admired phenomenon. It's about time it got to tell its story. By Brendan Kiley
