Swedish director Roy Andersson’s You, the Living is composed of 50 short, loosely interlocking sketches, each filmed in a single take. The subject matter, explored in dialogue, monologue, and song, ranges from broadly existential to acutely personal. The sets—a cafe, a carpet store, an office, an apartment—are pale and drab, suggesting a Sweden stricken by SAD. Midway through, a psychiatrist complains about having spent 27 years hearing about other people’s depressing lives. The viewer can relate.
