Church on Dauphine Street

Rated NR
A sweet, straightforward documentary about a New Orleans Catholic church and parish center that are stripped and rebuilt after Katrina with help from Seattle volunteers. Survivors grieve over lost property, drowned relatives, and memories buried under toxic mud, while the cheery Irish priest tries to keep his flock—a diverse mix of blacks, whites, and Latinos, along with a sizable deaf community—from falling apart. The documentary, by local filmmakers Ann Hedreen and Rustin Thompson, is too polite to dig up any drama or conflict, and so it ultimately fails as a freestanding film. But if you're interested in the subject matter, it's worth seeing.
