The Old, Weird America

Green star The Old, Weird America

Tues–Sun. Through Jan 3.
622-9250
Free
The Old, Weird America, organized by the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston: "Conviction is the core of folklore, not style. Folk art is not just a matter of untrained marks, but of untrained marks imbued with an unwavering but not entirely plausible sense of their own worth against the odds. How, then, should we consider The Old, Weird America: Folk Themes in Contemporary Art—aside from appreciating its stellar title, taken from Greil Marcus's book on Bob Dylan's basement tapes—featuring recent works by 18 formally trained artists who live in cities and who seethe with doubt rather than belief? There's good reason for this doubt; the show was organized, and almost all of its art made, during the Bush years, when you couldn't help but lose heart in what it meant to be American and long to go back to the beginning, in a search for wrong turns that might be righted. In that spirit, the artists of The Old, Weird America (Kara Walker, Brad Kahlhamer, Jeremy Blake, Allison Smith, Sam Durant, and David McDermott and Peter McGough, among others) are pioneers of the past." Parenthesis

Green star Parenthesis

Thurs–Sat. Through Dec 19.
838-7444
Free
Parenthesis: Seattle's great contemporary-collection space's fall show circles around the subject of parents and children. Video, installation, and photography by Neil Goldberg, Ann Hamilton, Guy Ben-Ner, theater designer Jennifer Zeyl, Kerry Tribe, and more. "Western Bridge's two-story space has never been altered this dramatically. It's transformed into a sort of meta-home with new arrangements of rooms and hallways and passageways. The theatrical framework underscores the idea that a family is something that has to be performed in order to survive. A home is a set that tells us what to do as much as it reflects us. Of course the art is good; this is Western Bridge. And there are some works you'd expect: a Sally Mann photograph of her children at half-naked play; a Tina Barney photograph of an upscale family; Neil Goldberg's video of his father breathing onto a mirror, proving his existence. But most things are terrific surprises." (Jen Graves)

Plot Point

Green star Plot Point

Wed–Sun. Through March 31.
654-3100
Five videos by the Belgian artist Nicolas Provost range in length from one minute to 15. He uses the universal language of filmmaking—the way you know what it looks like just before a kiss happens, the way you know the sound of suspense, the way you sense when a zoom is coming—and both shoots his own footage as well as uses footage from famous films. Bataille is a series of mirrored scenes from Kurosawa's Rashomon, which become monstrous in the doubling. Gravity is a tapestry of alternating kisses from movies that eventually start strobing and then disappear. It's seductive then disorienting. "My work is a reflection on the grammar of cinema and the relation between visual art and the cinematic experience," Provost has written. "That said, it's all about love." The longest of the videos is also the most involving: Plot Point, shot using a hidden camera on New York City streets, culminates in the mass, silent exodus of a seemingly endless line of twinkling and blinking police cars on their way to some unidentified emergency. Nothing actually happens over the 15 minutes, but it's entirely dramatic, because of the tensed-up music (by Moby) and the pans and zooms and cuts. This artifice has become our second nature.
