The Stranger

In Nathan DiPietro’s innocent-looking scenes—showing stylistic influences from 1930s American regionalist painting—the intrusions in the landscape are guilty and jarring. There’s the Green River, rolling along prettily… but dominating its far bank is a squat beige building: an LA Fitness center. He grew up around Issaquah, since swallowed by cookie-cutter developments like the Highlands, which are also captured in his paintings.
