Cobra High w/FCS North, the Vells
Sat Oct 12, Chop Suey, $7.

There's nothing better than witnessing a band flare up with talent before my very eyes. I'm not talking about the kind of band that rides into like town like Cleopatra on a barge, lifted high above heads due to fawning press and admiration. No, I'm talking about local four-piece Cobra High, who, over the course of three Seattle shows, have improved exponentially with every appearance and caused quite a stir among fans of prog, pop, and British synth rock. And here's a warning: Much ink will be spilled in these pages over this impressive new addition to Seattle's bustling music scene.

Six months ago, singer Justin Schwartz traded the 503 area code for the 206 and was joined by guitarist Joram Young, drummer Marty Lind, and bassist Colin Young. It should be noted that everyone besides Lind stands behind a bank of keyboards and synthesizers as they play their other instruments, showing off remarkable multitasking skills. Perhaps that's Schwartz's influence; he is, after all, a cusp-free Gemini.

The band's first show was at Graceland, and though it may have been less than exemplary and hindered with technical difficulties--the band members were obviously nervous--it was still boldly evident that Cobra High was at the genesis point of their impending genius. After only two more shows, they're drawing superlatives and comparisons to Yes, Pink Floyd, and Deep Purple's first six albums. Cabaret Voltaire and ESG also come to mind.

Though still in their formative stage, Cobra High has two four-song EPs on deck, due for release "sometime in November," according to Schwartz. Add N to (X)'s Barry 7 (née Smith--to say he knows his way around a synth is a gross understatement) will produce the first of the eponymous releases on his imprint Horse Glue. The first disc will initially come out in London, and the second will be released on Soul Jazz records (home to A Certain Ratio) shortly thereafter. Mute will distribute both EPs.

Listen: Get in on Cobra High early, my friends, and stand back in preparation for greatness.
