Señor Coconut (aka hyperprolific Uwe Schmidt) keeps working his kitsch shtick and, against steep odds, he continues to make interesting records, if not releases that will endure forever. Schmidt's gimmick with Around the World? Run popular club cuts (mostly from the '80s) through his electro-Latinizing sensibilities and, ¡olé!, smiling and dancing ensue. Daft Punk's title track, Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams," Prince's "Kiss," Trio's "Da Da Da," Laidback's "White Horse," and others get fried with Coconut and company's cha-cha-cha cheese. As novelty records go, Around the World is pleasurable and will likely enliven any party at which "camp" isn't loathed.
