The Eastside's art museum was imagined, in the boom days of the '90s, as a cutting-edge contemporary art center located inside a designer building. Steven Holl provided the designer building but contemporary art didn't draw the crowds, so the museum regrouped into an art, craft, and design showplace—and thanks to good curators, there's still plenty of contemporary art. Plus, the building actually works best for 3D craft and design.

Green star The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps 1942-1946

Tues–Sun. Through Oct 12.

The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps 1942-1946: "Gaman" is a Japanese term originating from Zen Buddhism that means "to endure the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity." For some of the Japanese American prisoners enduring the long injustice of internment, self-expression and artisanship were the key to gaman. This collection of their work—ranging from paintings to furniture to figurines, often fashioned from scrap materials and found objects—is stunning.
