DES AMIS LOUNGE1013 E Pike St, 322-0703Ten years ago, there were three or so East African restaurants in Seattle. Five years ago, there seemed to be one on every block in the Central District. Then came the grocery stores, the beauty salons, and gas stations. Recently, East Africans have been branching out of the traditional small businesses and opening bars and cafes with a more cosmopolitan look and feel. Cafe Noir on Aurora Avenue is such a place, as well as the DES AMIS LOUNGE, which is on Pike Street. The bar's décor is European, the owners are East African, the music played on the looming speakers is African American, the bartender is Haitian, and the city all of this is set in is Seattle. The drinks aren't bad either. CHARLES MUDEDE
