Emily Marsh
Since her much-loved band Faster Tiger disbanded, Emily Marsh has been involved with an assortment of projects, including the occasional collaboration with members of Yo La Tengo and her current involvement with the Black Cat Orchestra. She'll be playing a pivotal rhythmic role at the Sub Pop release party for Give the People What We Want: Songs of the Kinks on Fri Nov 16 at the Crocodile.

Do you know whether or not you're going to play with Mudhoney for this show? "Uh yeah, I guess I'll be part of a guest rhythm section. I just hope they're nice to me, because we're not practicing first. Very fly-by-the-seat-of-my-knickers kind of experience--and scary! I hear they're nice boys."

Any particular reason you're drawn to the Kinks? "Kwab [frontman for Kinks cover band the Kwabs] asked me if I'd play for the Hattie's Hat Christmas party a few years ago. Before then I really only knew--this is embarrassing--like, 'Lola' and 'Come Dancing.' He taught me about 20 of their early songs in a week, and I knew I was in for the long haul. Then I flew to NYC to see Yo La Tengo play with Ray Davies, and that was the clincher. I fell madly in love with Ray--hung out after the show and tried to get his guitar pick. He's dreamy."

Are you singing and drumming on everything? You've gotta be a little nervous.... "I'm singing and playing on a couple of songs with Larry Barrett and Lori and Kyle from the Black Cat Orchestra. Then I'm doing 'I Need You' and 'Who Will Be the Next in Line' with Mudhoney. The Kwabs will play whatever is missing from the night since we can play so many Kinks songs [laughs], and Spencer Moody will guest star with us, too. I'm nervous about all of it. I've become kind of a bookworm lately, and I'm out of practice with the RAWK."
