Kristin Tsiatsios
EVENT: Her new site-specific dance work, Alpha, will be performed during the First Thursday art walk.

Are you thinking about getting married? "Yes. [Pause.] Do you want me to expand on that?"

Sure. "I don't know if I necessarily want to. I won't be getting married next Thursday, if that's what you're asking. Nor will any of my performers."

But you're all dressed up as brides. "Seven of us are. There are probably 13 to 15 of us performing."

Why is marriage on your mind? "It's not so much marriage, it's that symbol of hope, the grass-is-always-greener kind of thing that brides portray for me."

Are you unhappy single? "I'm actually in a committed relationship. And I'm happily in that relationship."

But some part of you wants to dress in white and walk down the aisle. "Uhhhhh... no, I don't know necessarily white, I don't know necessarily aisle, maybe skip through a field or something like that."

But get married. "You're pushing the marriage thing too much, you're making me nervous."

I'm just curious what that grass-is-greener thing means to you. "It's kind of how we live--how we rarely live in the present, but most often are living in the future or the past. In the future you can project anything onto that blank canvas; it can be the perfect romance, the perfect job, the perfect new pair of jeans--and that's what I'm going for with these brides. It's a fresh start, a clean slate to begin this new life, but there's always that carrot in front of you: Now that I've got the marriage thing down, what about my career? What about my vacation home? [Someone speaks to Kristin at her end of the phone line.] My boss was just saying 'the baby' and I said 'NO!' Definitely not that--but it could be that for somebody."

If it's not marriage for you, what is it? "Time. Vacation. Adventure. A new pair of blue jeans."

What's wrong with what you're wearing now? "I wear it every day. It's boring. I know it."
