They do this Bullshit in Vancouver, too

If its an 'illegal' venue..it is likely not fire safe, either. But most importantly...the idea that a lost kid who might be saved through rock and roll cannot discover this show or be denied entrance if they find the place is grotesque and an affront to the entire purpose of Rand and Roll music.

band's just shouldn't advertise shows at this venue --- err, umm, house or whatever it is.......

It's all good to put on private house shows, but if you don't want "uninvited" people to show up or search for the address, ask the bands not to publicly advertise the shows online. Then having a word-of-mouth/personal-invite show is appropriate. Otherwise, if someone is looking up a band online, listens to the music and likes it, sees that the band is playing at Black Lodge, then discovers that it's someone's house - and that uninvited people shouldn't come - it's kind of a burn. Just tell the bands not to list shows at this "venue" online. Simple.

Found a show for this venue on soundonthesound.com, then tried to search for the address, and read weird stuff about how people shouldn't show up if they weren't invited. If that's the case, then shows at Black Lodge shouldn't be posted anywhere online; bands should just invite their friends and friends of friends personally.

But then...I read a post from a women saying she had been going there since she was 15....well...being a seattleite....i immediately remembered exactly where and what it is....lol....and I just gotta say....I hope it stays a secret for another 20 years like it has....its a real Seattle treasure that house is....So To All Out There getting pissed that its a secret loc...please understand....it needs to staay underground and off the radar. Ask some of your Punk friends! Theyll know where it is.....or just start walking throught the Eastlake neighborhood....lol

well...

so I was invited by word of mouth to the venue for a show tomorrow night and given the address...but now im not sure... is it okay to just walk up??? haha... and I agree take down the address... the only reason I found out where it is, was by word of mouth through friends. some things are just sacred.

The real question...

If you can't print the address, and not everyone is invited, why is it being promoted in the Stranger? Yes, it is quite a pretense to feature an event in the "Suggests" section but not provide the relevant information.

I think I'm the only reviewer here who's actually been

I've been going to Black Lodge since I was 15, back when it was called something else, Holy Mountain or something. This is not the Moore. This is not some hipster hideout that people are keeping from you because you don't have a Smith's tshirt. This is a place where people live, it's a house show and if you aren't invited, you aren't entitled to the address, that's like crashing someone's party. It's illegal, and it'd better fucking stay that way otherwise kids like me couldn't go, it'd have to be 21 and up and strict and you couldn't smoke inside, like every legal place in the city.

Also, LOL at the people who think you have to blow the Lo-Fi bouncer or something, and also at 'Seattlepunk', you're right, real punks don't do things unless they're licensed and conform to zoning laws.

My favorite band (Japanther) is gonna be there next week.

I've never heard of or been to this "venue." I don't understand why the address can't be disclosed. All I want to know is where this place is or who I should ask so I can go see my two favorite musicians in person.

Sometimes folks just don't know how to let go of themselves

We're all guilty of it, but after reading through this string of desperate pleas to get the address of The Black Lodge out there, I have to wonder, what you might do if you were having a house party and everyone in Seattle, no, scratch that, a handful of butt-hurt, annoyed people weren't invited and took it upon themselves to tell as many people as they could about it? You just might be pissed off.

The Lodge is essentially that. Folks living in a space that they open up to friends of theirs to play music. It's just about as illegal as having underage kids at your house party.

I hope, for your blood-pressure's sake, that you can let this go, folks.

Posting the address aids persecution!

I attend shows at The Black Lodge regularly and have spoken with the members their at length about this topic. The reason they ask that people don't post their address is simple, their venue, like most all-ages venues, is illegal. You can debate it all you want, but that fact of the matter is that hosting all-ages (everyone) in most places (with the exception of the few and dwindling government run teen centers)
is still a crime. The Black Lodge asks for secrecy to protect themselves from oppressive city authorities. In most cases freedom of the press helps topple elite hierarchies, but in THIS case making the location of The Black Lodge public aids the persecution of their space and their cause.

Most spaces NEED alcohol sales to make their venue financially viable. The Black Lodge depends on no such sales, and because of that runs on a very, very tight budget.

Please help protect this fragile space by removing their address. By the way, this thread is the first thing that comes up when you search 'Black Lodge location'.

Calling DIY efforts "pretentious" is pretentious

I know this is the internet, but why is everyone getting all up in arms about pretentious secret locations and "hipsters", whatever those are, and who to sue at a show you haven't even been to yet?

These are really negative attitudes.

I've never been to the Black Lodge, but I assume they're good (and probably not wealthy) people trying to create a unique space and community that they wouldn't otherwise be able to create through normal means. We need to support underground efforts like this, not tear them down as lame, or pretentious, or start planning for the worst. I mean when was the last time you sued a bar owner? Seriously.

Support the scene. Don't be a jerk. Don't post addresses for venues like this. You may ruin a really cool thing and get people evicted in the process.

Come on

They had shut down scares a while back, they're just covering their asses. Give 'em a break! And if you want to see a show at The Black Lodge, ask someone. Not that difficult. Hipster garb is a dead giveaway. Or the smell. But they're good people.

Updated: What

Turns out I've been told the location is secret for insurance purposes. Meaning that this venue is not licensed to be a public venue. How hard is that to say out loud? Do you really think that some regulatory authority is searching Stranger boards looking for insurance scammers? The secretiveness of this makes it look pretentious and bad when really they are just trying to do a DIY venue without attracting attention of any legal authority. I understand that, but the crap about safety of bands/fans was BS. That has nothing to do with anything.

What??

I don't understand the reasoning I'm seeing here that the address must remain unknown to protect the bands and fans of the venue. Why? Are the bands and fans of this venue targetted by some super incompetent terrorist group? What the hell are you talking about? Why would a venue need protection from those who might like to attend a show at said venue? Please explain.

And, YES, I do go to DIY shows and have in fact put on dozens of DIY shows over the years. Every time I did this I made sure that the address was on all promotions because I wanted EVERYONE who was remotely interested to attend. I'm serious about an explanation of why the address must be secret for safety purposes. I'm talking to you thissuckstakedowntheaddress.

There are reasons other then pretense to not have the address of a diy showspace on the internet where everyone (EVERYONE) can see it.

There are reasons other then pretense to not have the address of a diy showspace on the internet where everyone (EVERYONE) can see it. It's about the safety of the people who volunteer, play, and go to shows there. You really don't know that? Do you even go to DIY shows?

Agreed. Secret location <= lame.

From everything I can find, the location is at

429 Eastlake Ave, Seattle 98109.

This appears to also be the address of the Lo-Fi Performance Gallery--a solid music venue--making this information somewhat confusing. I suggest looking around the lo-fi for an entrance or practicing secret handshakes at the local bar. Or maybe you simply need to bribe the barteder with cash/blowjob (or be a cunning linguist if female?).

For all those screaming Censorship!!! F-em.

FREE THE INFORMATION, BIATCH!

*sigh* Agreed: secret location = lame/pretentious

As far as I can tell, the black lodge is at 429 Eastlake Ave. Seattle, WA 98109. However, this is also the same location as the Lo-fi performance gallery. Same thing? Maybe there's a 'secret' door or something.

Free the information!!!!!!

The Stranger needs to stop

The stranger, if you enjoy promoting music in anyway, you need to remove the black Lodge's address from your website. For the sake of this space and all the bands that grace it.
