Bar Details

  • Canterbury doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is—a grubby refuge with cheap liquor, pool tables, a fireplace, and fried bar food. It is perfectly situated, almost equidistant from a hospital (Group Health) and a cemetery (Volunteer Park). Because this is how we should spend the long, cold days between infancy and death—sitting by a fireplace with a glass of booze.
  • Hours: Sat-Sun 10 am-2 am, Mon-Fri 11 am-2 am.
  • Happy Hour: Mon-Fri 3-6 pm ($3 micros, discount beer, $2 appetizer menu).
  • Features: Full Menu, Gay-Friendly, Happy Hour, Good for Groups, Dogs Allowed and Free Wi-Fi
  • Scene: Pub and Dive

More charming than a drunk unicorn

I came for the beefed up happy hour (6 quarters + tip = 1 pint of frosty Oly) and stayed for the best happy rings $2 will get you, a juke box with a tasteful selection of punk and free pool on Sunday afternoons. For those who come for Magic night, get a milkshake and fries, and share some with the ladies, all right?

old standby

decent bar food

never know what kind of crowd will be there on a given night (can go either way)

could do without that "order here, at the cramped corner" thing

table service all the way, if you're headed there

like a comfortable old pair of shoes

One of my favorites in Seattle

Ah, the medieval-themed heavy metal bar...where else would you want to get some stubby beer bottles and huddle down in a corner? This dive bar's got a lot of personality - in the bartenders, the patrons, and the everpresent faint smell of vomit near the bar. A real unexpected Seattle gem. Has pool, pinball, and shufflepuck.

warm winter standby

sure, it may be summer right now, and you're drinking it up at smith with the garage door open - but what does the canterbury have that smith does not? a gas fireplace (and at least a decade and a half head start on the accumulation of grime). genuinely friendly and attentive staff, an interesting mix of local drunks, chess players, ren fair enthusiasts, hipsters, drunks, and other characters keep it interesting. when it's damp, cold and rainy, there's nothing like the table right by the fireplace to keep warm. that, and huge cans of pabst to keep you taking a leak every 20 minutes.

Take a trip through time

to old midievel times when men wore suits of armor and the maidens had to make their own soap and candles out of beef fat. I actually love this bar with all my heart. The folks who hang out here are easy-going types and there's even a gauntlet of salty, old school Seattle drunks you have to pass through to get to the pool tables. The food? Naw, you didn't come here for the fuckin' food, but it will fill you up just fine. Brekky at all hours...
