News flash: Christian conservatives dislike gays. Seattle Rep. Ed Murray's nondiscrimination bill passed out of committee last week, though not before religious opponents contended that "this bill will force companies to hire people with reprehensible lifestyles, and business owners will have to accommodate those people with things like special bathrooms," according to a synopsis in the senate bill report. Final passage is still uncertain. Another high-profile Murray bill, mandating stricter auto-emission standards, got a huge boost last week when auto manufacturers, who had testified against the bill, announced they had voluntarily agreed to similar standards in Canada.
